About WristWriter®
The "Long Story"
Recently,
Jack Cribbs of Cribbs Woodworking has decided to market a device that
he came up with to solve a few simple problems that he was having in his
small New England woodworking shop. It started on a winter morning last
year when Jack went down to his work shop to start on a new entertainment
center that he had just designed for one of his customers. The prior day
he had prepared his stack of raw lumber to be cut, joined and planed
and he had left the drawings and the cut list down in the shop. It was
now 7 am. and Jack was looking forward to a productive day of work and
that was when it happenened.
"Somebody" had
placed the measurements where they weren’t obvious to find, and
the search was on. Jack looked everywhere and ten minutes later
he finally found the measurements on the underside of a piece of cherry
that he had inadvertently knocked on the floor. A little agitated, he
placed the list on top of his table saw, then he realized his
tape measure was nowhere in sight. You guessed it, another
ten minutes later and he finally secured one of his five invisible
tape measures. Now at this point in time the steam was just starting
to rise and Jack was in no mood to keep this unproductive activity going
but as fate would have it, of the 20 pencils known to be in his shop,
not one was in sight. He looked under benches and in drawers, on shelves
and even in the trash barrel, finally one materialized at the bottom
of his nail apron.
The
steam was now spewing from both ears, and Jack eyes were at the bulging
point and the desire to be productive was being replaced by something
evil and destructive. At the last moment, just before melt down, a light
went on in Jacks' head as he realized that there must be a better way.
He looked at his collection of notes, tape measure and pencil and he
started to think that there must be something at the lumber yard or the
office store that could help so he went to the nearest store and started
his search but there was nothing that could cure his dilemma, at least
nothing in complete form. Jack’s next plan was to make something
for himself that would solve his particular problem. He went to the Pharmacy
and purchased a wrist support, (the kind with a metal brace on the inside)
on the way out of the store he noticed a bin of throw away cameras. Cameras,
that sparked a second idea.
When he reached his
shop he cut a slot in the wrist brace for the clip on the tape measure
and put the apparatus on, it was comfortable and surprisingly it was
not in the way. He then designed
a scrolling device that used some cash register paper as his note pad.
As luck would have it there was a 2” velcro type band that
stretched over the wrist so Jack applied a patch of hook material to
his scrolling pad of paper and then applied it to the top of his wrist
and that was the first WristWriter®.
Several
days later Jack was starting a new project and already had a good
idea as to how long it would take to complete the job. He estimated cutting
time would be somewhere around 16 hrs. He went to work but this time
he was using his new device and 4 hours later he was done. Now I realize
that this sounds like a fairy tale but it’s true, when you add
up the time spent reaching into your pouch to grab your tape, measure
your board, find your pencil, locate your measurements, make your mark
and put all that stuff back it adds up. Then think about all the times
the phone rings or somebody talks to you and you loose your place. Then
think about all the times you measured something and put your tape away
only to write the number down wrong, and then not only will you loose
time but you just cut your piece the wrong length. The larger the job
the greater the time savings.
Now
the product has evolved into a simple comfortable device, it includes
a velcro backed elastic wrist band, a scrolling writing pad with plenty
of paper to complete multiple jobs with, a nesting place for a mechanical
pencil and a specially sized pencil. The
product comes with extra, pressure sensitive hook pads for attaching
a tape measure or other device such as a PDA or cell phone.
Since
developing the various prototypes, Jack claims to save time and
aggravation throughout his entire day by having a running list of things
to do as well as shopping lists and phone numbers, names of people that
he meets, directions to places and he even uses it on his motorcycle
to track mileage and locate the latest pig roast or poker run.
